@AVALANCHE - blog

AVALANCHE is defined by Webster's as: "an unstoppable natural force"...and this all-original rock band certainly seems to fit that definition...overcoming the odds to produce some of the very best original hard rock anywhere! With an unorthodox strategy for success in 1978 (which included 18 months of intense rehearsals, their own record label, $75,000.00 worth of state-of-the-art stage gear, and a record on over a dozen New England radio stations for three months...all before ever playing a live gig) Avalanche's debut show was attended by over 3500 people..and the band was immediately playing to sold-out shows and standing room only crowds wherever they appeared. Within a month after their first gig, AVALANCHE was headlining in large club venues, and shortly after that, the band was opening tour dates and sharing concert stages on AC/DC's "Highway To Hell" tour, as well as with DERRINGER, and THE PAT TRAVERS BAND. They were also considered as a tour opener for TOTO's First U.S. Tour. A tight and well rehearsed rock-n-roll machine...this band did whatever was necessary to bring studio-quality hard rock to the live-concert stage...and they did it without the support of a major record label. Now recording again, with all the surviving members of the original lineup...here is the first new AVALANCHE music in over twenty years...as well as some of their old music too, (most of the recordings have never been available before). AVALANCHE continues to defy the odds with their staying power and persistence...and by remaining "unstoppable"...they are here NOW....for you to sample and enjoy! GOLDEN SUN RECORDS We are an all-original hard rock band that writes Mainstream songs that draw from many influences...we have been told repeatedly that our songs are different, yet vaguely familiar, at the same time. Avalanche's original writing style is largely Colliseum-style 70's British Rock...married to American Blues-Oriented Southern Rock...but there are clearly elements from many other distinct influences...and today the new Avalanche draws from all of those influences to be fresh, current, and viable...but still remains true to it's original band identity. Members of Avalanche have played in bands with Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, Big Mama Thornton,The Steve Miller Band, Johnny Winter, Matt "Guitar" Murphy (from The Blues Brothers), The James Cotton Band, Mitch Ryder, Lester Chambers (The Chambers Brothers), The Electric Flag (1988), Kal David and The Real Deal, The Buddy Cage Band, The Jeff Pitchell Band, The Commitments,The Foster Brothers Band, The Easton Brothers Band, Sweet Daddy Cool Breeze, Eight-To-The-Bar, and The Mohegan Sun All-Stars (formerly The Shaboo All-Stars...a group which Avalanche leader Michael Foster and his brother David Co-Founded and which Michael was the Musical Director of for many years...and occasionally still performs with...when schedules and geography permit. The "All Stars" features past and present members of CS&N, Tower of Power, The Joe Cocker Band, Dr. John, Orleans, the Fabulous Rhinestones, Maceo Parker, James Brown, Rod Stewart, and many, many other artists. That group is currently the "House Band" at The Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut...one of the largest Casinos in the world ..and the band has constantly changing personnel...it is truly an "All-Star" group).Avalanche members have also been "guest artists" in bands with B.B. King, Muddy Waters, The James Montgomery Band, Rick Derringer, and numerous other groups.In addition, Avalanche members have opened major concerts to dozens of National and Internationally known recording acts.EQUIPMENT USED BY AVALANCHEMARSHALL VINTAGE (1972) JMP100 WATT FULL STACKSPOINT-TO-POINT SOUND BLUES 60 AMPS (CUSTOM-MADE)Altec Lansing 417-8H Series II SpeakersDAVID EDEN BASS AMPSYAMAHA SG2000 VINTAGE (1976) PROTOTYPE ELECTRIC GUITARSUSA FENDER GUITARSSCHECTER GUITARSTACOMA DR38E4 ACOUSTIC GUITARS w/FISHMAN E4 ACTIVE ELECTRONICS MARTIN ACOUSTIC GUITARS,OVATION CUSTOM BALLADIER GUITARSELIXIR STRINGSPEAVEY ECOUSTIC 112 ACOUSTIC GUITAR AMPSSONOR DRUMSPAISTE CYMBALSEVENTIDE PITCH FACTOR (HARMONIZER)EVENTIDE TIME FACTOR (DIGITAL DELAY)MORLEY PEDALSVISUAL SOUND PEDALSAKAI PROFESSIONAL DIGITAL ELECTRONICS(GOFF MODIFIED) HAMMOND B-3 ORGAN w/LESLIE 122 GENERAL MUSIC PRO 2 DIGITAL PIANO (REAL PIANO)PEAVEY KB300 TRI-CHANNEL KEYBOARD AMP HOHNER D6 CLAVINETSENNHEISER 421, 431, 431 (CONDENSER) MICSSHURE BETA 87A CONDENSER MICSELECTROVOICE RE-20 PL-10 MICSRODE NTK MICS,RODE NT-5 MICSGROOVE TUBE VINTAGE GT-55 MICSAUDIO-TECHNICA AE2500 DYNAMIC/CONDENSER MICSLINE 6 POD XT PEDALBOARDC&D ROAD/FLIGHT CASES FOR ALL GEARTo see additional pictures go to http://www.soundclick.com/Avalanche and click on "PHOTOS"Special Thanks to: My parents, Lisa, Stephanie, The Shaboo Inn, LaSalle Music (East Hartford, Conn.), Marathon Music Center and George's Music (West Palm Beach, Fl.)

Howdy gang...

I just got off the phone with Australia...and it seems that David Pendragon discovered an audio recording of a gig I did with Buddy Guy and Junior Wells when I was the Hammond organist for that group (1972-1973)... while looking for historical footage for our documentary. I have never heard any recordings of my time with this band before this track was found....but I clearly recognize my Hammond B-3 and Leslie by the tones I always used (and still do at times) when I played back then...and by my playing style. I was just 21 years old when this recording was made.

Even though this recording is almost 40 years old...it was taken right off the sound board at The Shaboo Inn, a legendary concert club that was owned by my two brothers...so it is very clear. The dates indicated were clearly during my stint with that band. After listening to it...I realize this is at the beginning of a set...before Buddy Guy and Junior Wells are brought up to the stage. They always did the "Chicago" thing of letting the band warm up the crowd before the REAL stars of the show hit the stage...so the vocalist and guitarist you are hearing is actually the late, great Phillip Guy (Buddy's younger brother) who was himself a great blues guitarist and vocalist who was very partial to Albert Collins-style guitar playing. The drummer is a guy who simply was known as "The Snake"...and the bass player was a guy named Herman Applewhite. I play the B-3. Unfortunately there is no video...but finding this recording is still like finding a gift.

Enjoy.

LINK: <a href=&quotbuddy guy - track 3 - Born under a bad sign.
