GUITAR or BASS ?

Being uneducated in the world of music.(You know, not being able to play an instrument of any discription) I&nbsp;have always&nbsp;thought that "guitars" and "bass`s" were the same, you know, both termed as GUITARS. That a bass GUITAR, as I`ve always called it, was just a guitar with less strings, though I do know that some have five and some six&nbsp;and that they play lower notes. "I KNOW" I can tell the difference when listening. Sorry to be such a dumb F here. Just wondered if I`m alone in the way I`ve thought about them.<br />

Thanks for this Gina, and I quote..:-)

"Bass is my favorite instrument! Something uberCOOL about it's low, percussive effect that can drive a song anywhere you want to go! Now, in acoustic music, many times there is no bass-- just a few acoustic guitars and one, two, thre-- four voices in my case. One of us would tune our low strings down and throw some lower stuff in, once in awhile. A little bass goes a long way in acoustic. Often defines the personality in a tune."

I love the sound of bass too, my favorite bass player was and probably still is Steve Pearce, one of the now defunct "Rocketears" that I was so lucky to make so many songs with...My late friend Clint Warwick, who was the original bass player with "The Moody Blues" used to tell me that the bass was the heartbeat of a song..:-) I like to think of it that way too now...:-)

Love to all..xx :-)

Mags xx :-)

Less flakey than drummers? Ouch! Not much of a compliment. How about this - the bass player is the bridge between the percussion and the melody. Playing bass is often referred to as "driving the bus" - not as flashy an occupation as say, guitar god of lead singer, but it gets the whole band to the final destination, on time! A really good bass player pulls in the kick drum and puts some mustard on it to show off some musicianship.

I would also add that bass players were usually less flaky than drummers in bands :)

Time to run! hehe

you are exactly right darling girl.. in terms of electronic fretted instruments they are indeed one in the same.. as you mentioned a bass guitar has fewer strings and plays lower notes.. they are tuned the same, the bass corresponding to the 4 lower strings of the guitar E.. A.. D.. G.. the biggest difference of course being the roles played although nowdays with 6 string basses we often get to hear melody lines etc on the bass.. a very lovely sound to be sure.. cheers.. :-)
