Hoodie Dubsteppers, Ooberfuse successful in helping Catholic Church find new priests in the UK
By vickyberry, 2012-09-04

The Catholic Church’s innovative decision to ask Ooberfuse a four piece street savvy band from London, to help them show how God speaks to the young of the UK, perhaps to be the next generation of clergy ,has proved a huge success since its inception in the spring of this year. The initiative was the brainchild of Father Christopher Jamison , Head of the Catholic Church of England & Wales' National Office of Vocation, who decided that by using music appealing to a wide cross section of the public who might not ordinarily think of The Church as an employment route he could encourage the youth to view a life in the clergy as a serious life time option.

As Hal from Ooberfuse explains - Up until Father Jamison's initiative the church in many ways co-existed in splendid isolation from the world ie. It stood as a self-sufficient fortress in opposition. Catholics were found in corners, and alleys, and cellars, and attics, in the recesses of the country, some may say , cut off from the world around them, dimly seen, as if through a mist or in twilight, as ghosts flitting too and fro.

Now The Church wants to start a conversation with the world and has chosen the music of Ooberfuse as part of the language of that conversation. Through it Father Jamison hopes to engage with otherwise unreachable sectors of the population. Dub step, the national language of the hoodie state, is like Heineken...it reaches parts that other languages, like Latin and Greek, do not reach..

‘We are forging a culture of vocation and a culture includes music and the arts.’ Explains Father Jamison ‘So the song from Ooberfuse is part of the new phase of vocational culture amongst workshops in deaneries and parishes’

The Catholic Church’s desire to work with Ooberfuse clearly shows a strategy to target the street culture of the UK in their efforts to broaden interest and appeal . It is just one of the causes that the band have been asked to support including being asked to use their music to support the Pakistani Woman Asia Bibi imprisoned and on a death sentence for blasphemy. Just another strange story in the growing awareness behind the band whose members include relatives of Chairman Mau and an unbroken link within one of the band back to post Norman Britain.

Shot 21 is the sensational rapping alter ego of Brett Brown. The talented 24 yr old solo artist has thus far enjoyed recognition from his contemporaries and fans internationally – notably America, Europe and Australia.

Starting his career in 2005, Shot 21 has recorded 30 tracks including working with legendary Bay Area rapper and producer Assassin. Assassin – renowned for his work with such artists as Fat Joe, Eazy E, Kurupt and the phenomenal Tupac Shakur – was approached by Shot 21 and impressed with Shot’s passion and lyrics.

Shot 21 has also enjoyed collaborating with Ictus’s very own Andy Allen. Amongst this body of work was his hometown’s - Leicester - club favourite “Set The Mic On Fire”. Now the C.E.O of his own label: Nu Fort Records he has secured a worldwide digital distribution deal and released his debut album Plots & Plans which is available online in stores such as Amazon MP3 and iTunes.

Driven to vocalise his message and opinions through music, combined with his socially relevant stories as well as his multi-syllable rhyming technique, Shot 21 is certainly one to look out for

A Number 1 album showcasing the timeless talent of Andy Leek – by the production of Beatles producer Sir George Martin; who stated that “Andy is one of the most talented artists I have ever produced”

Andy became a member of iconic 80’s band Dexy's Midnight Runners from the ripe age of 16; having already played on Radio 1 twice in sessions with John Peel and on Radio 2’s live ‘in’ concert.

Andy played on the No 1 Hit "Geno" and on the album “Searching for the Young Song Rebels” at the beginning of his journey. Since leaving the band, his solo career has blossomed with the displays of his talents – his flair for writing songs is evident by him writing for the likes of Tom Jones and Frida (from Abba) “Twist in the Dark” (1984) was the track off the album “Shine”, that, arguably, gave Frida her greatest artistic success after leaving ABBA.

Jeff Wall (Caught in the Act) said “Say Something” was a “pearl hidden on the floor of the black ocean”, as its exciting production- uniting talents Andy Leek and producer Sir George Martin- was brushed under the carpet at the time, drowning in an influx of Britpop and synthesisers, and for twenty years, was consigned to lie in a publishers loft. But, since then, Say Something has been dug out by many willing enthusiasts, with offers to re-master the timeless tracks. The renewed album includes two remixes by hot U.K producer Rachel James, brand new songs: “All Around the World” and “So Blind” plus an exclusive interview with George Martin himself on why he produced the album. As well as impressing industry legends, like Jools Holland, with his “undiscovered classic”, Andy has established his appeal to the masses through his meaningful melodies and lyrics: During the civil war in Beirut in 1990, the title track “Say Something” became not only Number 1 in the top 100 songs of that year, but also an anthem of inspiration to the people during their hardships.

All recorded at A.I.R Studios, the album is published by E.M.I Music with distribution by Universal Music Operations

Congratulations to Terry Ponder for being Mixposure's Artist of the Month! Terry had been a part of Mixposure since the early days and has some great music!

Bio:

My name is Terry Ponder, I have played Music for most of my life and it’s a big part of my life, I also Love to produce and record, which in later years has become a very big passion. I have a small home studio and create all the music you hear from there. In recent years I have gotten kind of away from the Live gig scene and have started trying to do more in studio work, I enjoy this a lot. Between myself, My buddies David Goehring and Lance McAllister, we have a great time in the studio creating more of what we like to think of as Works of Art than just music, I truly hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Peace Terry Ponder

Create Your Own Playlist
Mixposure.com

Anyone familiar with Graham Harper’s music is well aware of his ability to captivate a crowd. The young singer/songwriter is exciting audiences in his newly adopted hometown of Los Angeles, where he moved in 2011 after garnering significant interest in his music within the L.A. entertainment scene. His warm and endearing stage presence have effectively launched him into the musical realm, but his songs are what send him soaring over the edge. Graham Harper’s energetic pop rock music; characterized by charming, yet powerful vocals, lyrical guitar work, and thoughtful, honest lyrics, has earned him recognition as a respectable musician throughout the industry in Southern California and beyond.

Growing up in San Francisco, Graham was always interested in music, having been involved in choirs, musical theater and various bands throughout his life. However, something about being a songwriter interested him more than anything else.

During his youth, Graham’s dad constantly played bands like The Beatles, Billy Joel, and Eric Clapton.

“My Dad always valued an emphasis on genuine musicianship,” says Graham. “I knew I wanted to make music when I listened to them. They evoked true inspiration, and I always wanted to translate that creativity into the modern music world.”

After moving to L.A., his love for his craft and his determination earned him praise from various clubs in Hollywood, such as House of Blues, Falcon Lounge, El Cid, and more. He’s a young man performing on the stage like a seasoned veteran, having been influenced by Jason Mraz, John Mayer, Michael Buble, and the R&B/classic rock acts that came before his time.

Graham’s passion for songwriting is clearly evident, and it’s his dedication to his music that inspires him to keep writing.

“I’m in a place where I’m really offering pieces of my life to people, and the most exciting thing is that they’re enjoying it and wanting to listen.”
