The Journey

The Journey

I sent some of this as a reply to a review I got on the song The Journey.
I include it here as a way to give a complete background to the story of the song.

I've been an off-shore sailor since I was a young man and it never ceases to give me joy to be out there where the world has a pulse you can feel at the wheel of a sailboat. The sea is like a fickle woman. One minute she's making you as happy as you've ever been in your life, and the next, she's trying to kill you. But like the hopeless romantic you must be to cross the sea in the first place, you go back for more.
This was a challenging trip to say the least and after the first two days of perfect sailing, it turned and tried to retire anyone out there for good. I'm a fairly accomplished foul weather sailor, but that storm spanked me like a red headed step child...lol.
I took my lead guitar player Sean and my eldest son John, both in their early 20's, on the trip, neither of whom had ever been sailing or at sea. They both thought it was a little nuts to be out there in such weather, but they never questioned my judgment or the duties they performed to keep us safe and afloat. I watched them turn from boys to men right there in front of me.
Four days of relentless wind and high seas are a challenge for a seasoned sailor. I must admit it was one of the proudest times of my relationship with them. They acquitted themselves as well as any men I've sailed with. With good spirits and good humor they faced what turned out to be a very perilous time with grace. I will always remember them as the men they became that week.
The Coast Guard was pulling seasoned watermen from the brink of destruction, and my new shipmates were as good as the test. The story of the Pamela Ann is related exactly as is unfolded for two watermen and their stricken vessel two miles off the coast of Cape May New Jersey in a storm they soon won't forget.
The trip got progressively more difficult for us as we continued up the coast on our forty foot sloop 'The Journey', bound for the protected waters of Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay. Most of that time was spent heeled over with the port deck in the water and six to ten foot waves breaking over our starboard side much of it in the dark.
A five day trip took nearly 10 and their faith in me, my skills as a sailor, the things they learned so well, and in our good ship will remain with me long into my memory. It's not for everyone to test their mantle in this way and after so many miles at sea, I am always humbled by those that do.
Johnny and Sean didn't cower...they are good men.

They will always have my warmest regards
John

FWIW -- The Bombastic Jukebox

By crajnai, 2008-01-01

I am a noobie, and an old one at that. I will be uploading the songe I wrote over the course of about twenty years, from 1987 to now. Nearly all of of them were performed solely by me on the legendary Korg Polysix. Soe drum machines thrown in here and there. As per the rules, I will not be posting any of the covers I have done, although I have quite a few of them. We will see.

Post your comments, as you will.

Chuck Douglas.

Thanx for the comments

By crajnai, 2008-01-01

Thank you guys for the PMs and comments on the stuff I uploaded. I have gotten some mixed reviews, mostly negative. That;s cool. I certainly wasn't expecting much., I have gotten used to the shrugs and whispers and odd looks.

I do not know much about internet free play music sites, but I have sure heard some trash on others. I have not been here long enough to pass judgement on this site, as you folx have. Maybe this one is a bit more professional, and that is fine. You are certainly entitled to your opinions of my music, I appreciate that. But I am of the opinion that there is really no 'bad' music, just different. Each piece is an expression of a mood, feeling or a representation of something else percieved. My music is no exception. I do not expect everyone to 'get it'.

I was classically trained. I have played Beetoven, Mozart, Joplin and Gershwin pieces. I can sight read, I like to play latin and bossa. It may not show, and my chops may not be all there considering my age, but I know my stuff for the most part.

But why am I explaing myself?

My intent is certainly not to damage anyone, nor to annoy. This is all experimental electronica instrumentals, except for Platinum Blonde Neon Bimbo, which is there to grab a laugh or two. Think of them as period pieces; answers to what I heard in the dance clubs, the radio and other drivel that was pop at the time. Some songs are just attempts to take pieces of that and drive them someplace different. Others are strictly mood pieces, like "Feverish" which quite literally I wrote when home from work with a fever. Does it give you a headache? It should, but if it annoys you, turn it off. But you can't turn off a fever, that's the point.

Some of the originals I have done are strictly meditative, trance inducing pieces on the New Age side of things. I have a complete set of meditations that I was considering posting, but I expect I will get the same reaction to those.

My experience has been that collaborating with other musicians is generally a farce, with most folx just out there to have a few laughs rather than actually perform, or goodness forbid, create anything interesting. My real work with other formed bands has been from an engineer's side of things, running rigs and mastering records and all that. Keyboardists like me have been underappreciated for all the years I have been around, expecially by the guitar-playing sect. Even electronica pioneers like Gary Numan and Kraftwerk have had to employ guitars just to stay in the loop. I find that very disapointing. What happened to Dick Hyman?

So yes, all you hear is drum machines, synth bass, and no guitar, since I play none of those. Take it for what it is, a pre-midi one man band, all electronic. If you do not like the texture, or the monotany, you are welcome to add something to it. I would be really interested to hear what somebody could do with a mash-up of these tracks. And I would be really excited to do an online collaboration with almost anybody (that does not play country music). Especially if there are electronica folx in here. I think I counted about ten, total.

Again, thanx for the comments, but really, it is what it is. I will be working on some new things over winter. Hopefully you will find them a better fit. Meanwhile I will see what I can do with some of the old stuff, but I feel that they will stay pretty much as is for now.

Principles

By dovidhalevi, 2007-12-31

I believe that music and musical talent are G-d given gifts and as such should be used for positive and healing purposes.

Music promoting drugs, lawlessness, immorality and such is a profanation of that talent and gift and is intolerable. Use of pornographic or otherwise compromised image of oneself or others to promote music puts a lie to that music.

Let us respect each other, keep things clean and cooperative. Let's keep on singing!

2008

2008

what is happening ?
I think Tay Zonday has found the answer : advertise : write songs no matter how goofy about specific products . " Chocolate rain " was this song written about Chocolate cherry Dr pepper ?
This kid could be a comic genius , the original video does not have the Dr pepper bottle in it , later on the next video is an obvious commercial . He also did a rap song about Turbo tax , not sure if the TURBO TAX guys have picked this one up . Anyway he must have got paid something for " Chocolate rain and the verzion commercial .
So should I spend the time performing and scrimping and saving for a broad cast quaility Cd that a may sell enough copies of to break even OR by a web camera and make really strange songs about products I like with awful lyrics that point to the virtues of " Shiner Bock beer ",
" Yukon jack whiskey ", " Martin tires " , Hot Pockets " and " Delimex chicken taquitos " ?

cheers 2008
