Self Tort "Exhumed"

By selftort, 2013-08-29
Self Tort "Exhumed"

Our Australian National Broadcaster the ABC has, on its youth network, run for many years a competition called "unearthed" seeking young unheard bands.

The Sydney afternoon presenter on 702ABC (who himself played in well-known Sydney bands in the 80s) decided to run a similar competition for more mature musos which he called "Exhumed".

I decided to form a band to enter the competition and we were shortlisted for the Sydney Final which was held at the Basement, one of Sydney's premier musical venues. And lo and behold we won.

It was a fabulous night and now we have to wait to see whether we survive the cull from the 42 regional finalists to the final 6.

In the meantime though, we are part of a People's Choice contest with other regional winners. I am attaching a link where, if you wish, you can go to vote. Needless to say we are "Self Tort"

Song

By Sam Houston, 2013-08-29

I uploaded a new song called "Aint' No Grave".

The song Ain’t No Grave is a gospel song that was originally done by a guy named Claude Ely back in 1934 but he re-recorded it in 1941 and it was a hit for him. Johnny Cash did a version of it and it was also a hit for him. I think it was on the second to last album he did before he died.

There’s a young country gospel singer named Colby Perry from Scottsville, Kentucky that has a really cool version of Ain’t No Grave that he did. He was an American Idol Season 12 qualifier and is trying again this year. He contacted me a couple of days ago and wanted to know if I would add harmonies to his version of Ain’t No Grave. He sent it to me and I sat down last night and added the harmonies you hear on it. Check it out.

Sarahpetrella - Mixposure.com Song of the Week

Congrats to Sarapatrella for having the Mixposure.com Song of the Week! Please chack out the tune Daughter on her page here

Bio:

Sarah Petrella Heats Up the Music Scene with Debut EP, Summer

Los Angeles, CA-- One can say that Sarah Petrella’s path to the release of her debut EP started from the moment she was born. She wrote her first song before the age of 10, and went on to immerse herself in musical theatre. Now Sarah brings her lifelong passion for songwriting to the world via a three song EP, titled Summer. The EP features two original songs and a powerful cover of Pearl Jam’s classic, “Daughter.” Summer was produced by Geza X Gedeon, best known for his work on Meredith Brooks’ smash hit, “Bitch.”

From a very young age, musical theatre gave Sarah the greatest opportunity to gain exceptional performing skills and constant practice of her writing abilities. While she performed consistently in both California and New York, Sarah never left her songwriting behind. She made her way to Nashville at just 15 years old, where she wrote and recorded with several prominent musicians including famed songwriter, Don Goodman. From that point on, Sarah continued to pursue a very successful career in musical theatre, but kept coming back to songwriting, which is now her full time artistic endeavor. As Sarah says, “Songwriting is my true love and passion.”

Sarah’s songs break the barriers of being genre-specific, and one can hear elements of pop, rock, folk, and even some country in her tunes.  She notes influences as diverse as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Sara Bareilles in her music. Of the two original tracks, “Summer” and “Time Stands Still,” she claims the latter as her personal favorite because her younger sister made lyrical contributions to the song, and she considers it a great bonding moment in their relationship. KCRW, one of the most influential stations in the United States for independent music, says of Sarah: “She goes from light fun, to Broadway, to alt-folk rock in just three cuts-- Petrella is a musician in the fullest sense of the word.

Sarah decided to cover Pearl Jam’s “Daughter” as the final cut on the EP because of  the strong influence the 90s rock era has on her music.  She also felt that she could bring a unique female perspective to one of the band’s most moving songs. KCRW states that Sarah’s rendition is “…strong, sweet and I think better than the original, which is a classic.”

From a production standpoint, the connection that Sarah found with Geza X was immediate and incredibly special. “We always seem to read each other’s minds,” she says. In addition, Ben Harper's rhythm section stepped up to record on the disc. Sarah feels it was a perfect match and that the combination of Jordan Richardson on drums and Jesse Ingalls on bass brought her songs to life-- exactly how she was hearing them in her head.

Sarah hopes that her music will connect with people on a very deep and personal level, as her musical inspiration is derived from her life experiences and relationships. “Being able to listen to music and know exactly what the artist was thinking about is an amazing feeling. I want to be able to do that for others.”
