Every Step
"Well I don't know what will happen now.
We have some difficult days ahead
It doesn't really matter with me now
I may not get there with you." he said
“But I have been to the mountaintop”
He said that God had allowed him to see
He said we'd get to the other side
He said one day all men would be free
To get a breath of the evening air
He stepped out on the hotel balcony
The howling darkness found him in the cross hairs
And shot him there in Memphis, Tennessee
Nothing is gained, without a loss
Nothing is changed without destruction
Nothing is saved without a cost
Absolutely nothing
Beauty rises from ugliness
Compassion springs from the shame of violence
A voice cries in the wilderness
But, nothing good ever comes from silence
Every step is a step to the positive
Though sometimes it seems we're going backwards
Every step is a step to the positive

The apple orchards are filled with freedom songs
I heard them singing from the top of the ladder
Not sure if I was hearing crying or laughter
Not understanding very much of the matter
But I remember that day1963
When we were told about president Kennedy
They sent us home from school an hour early
So we could watch TV with our families
Sometimes a man breaks all earthly bonds
And doesn’t care of the consequences
A woman rises against oppression
And can’t be made to “come to her senses”
Nothing is gained, without a loss
Nothing is changed without destruction
Nothing is earned without a cost
Absolutely nothing
