Song Lyrics
Afterburner
(Carl Edlund Anderson)
Come on.
Step aboard
And make it fly.
We're running far
Too fast to die.
We're cutting loose
So many years
Push it back...
Step aboard
And make it fly.
We're running far
Too fast to die.
We're cutting loose
So many years
Push it back now, baby.
Light the frozen spheres.
I'm setting down 'cause it's your turn.
Get it on and watch it
Burn ....
Change the constant.
Plug it in.
Cross the streams and really
Make it spin.
On and on and on,
You know we're breaking free.
Send that silver dream
Crashing through reality.
I'm taking off 'cause it's your turn.
Get it on and make it
Burn ....
Take a ride.
All right.
Step aboard
And touch the sun.
Take it off now, baby.
Start your final run.
And every star
Will light our crown
One million miles away
And never coming down.
We're on our way 'cause it's your turn.
Get it on and ride that
Burn ....

I originally recorded this on my beloved Roland VS-1680 a couple of years ago, and during the early 2000s, I played the song live many times with a band in the UK. I always meant to record a new version myself, making several abortive starts in GarageBand, and though I altered the main riff slightly to a version I liked better, I never got guitar/bass sounds that I liked as much as the ones recorded with the VS-1680's COSM amp sims.
When I left England for South America, I couldn't take the the VS-1680 (sniff!), but I slurped all its recordings off to GarageBand. The new version is a remix of the original (using the original riff, and even the same rough vocal track), with new drums, a different ending (made by hacking up the original one!), and "guest synths" played by my good friend Scott "Dr. Space" Heller (currently Øresund Space Collective and formerly live with Denmark's now-defunct Gas Giant).
Perhaps I'll eventually find the magic guitar/bass sounds that inspire me record a whole new version, but for now I'm happier than ever with this one. :)

hard drivin rock! love the way it works up to the crescendo at 4:15! wow! cool stuff.... how low is that guitar tuned? lol! hey some nice bass work in there too!
Funny you should make the Morrison comparison on the vox, as it's been made before when I sing in that register (a more comfortable space for my vocals than the octave I higher I go on, like, "Twa Corbies")! But it's true that the vocals are a _little_ low in the mix -- they're actually pushed as high as I could in GarageBand, but I think I pushed all the rest of the instruments higher in the search for that "wall o' guitars" vibe ... and then was too lazy to tweak everything else back down a couple of notches.
Those are the original vox from the old demo, though. As the synths are really just some old samples my synth-playing friend sent me, he's promised to do some purpose-played synths for the track. When I get those, I'll probably take the time to try to push things around to raise the vox in the mix, or even record new vox .... (For a song I played live so many times, this recording is really a Frankenstein! So it goes!

Wow, made me think of BTO with the heavy beat and then the lead coming in. I just wish your vocals were a little more up front. I could not make out the words clearly.

Yeah...takeoff immediately. Then the afterburners kick in after the 3 min mark. The song is reminiscent of somewhere between Steppenwolf and Ten Years After...a really cool blend. Great job Carl..the song has plenty of interest and drive. I think you're vox could be brought upfront more. The instrumental interlude is very cool..love the progressions!! Great job. ~Blake

Formed in 1971 Carl grew up on a musical diet of folk, jazz, and classical music, before succumbing to the heady glories of rock-and/or-roll in a teenage daze. Since then, he's played various instruments (badly) in various bands in the US and UK. Now based in Colombia, South America, he continues mucking around in his (extremely rudimentary) home studio and looking for new opportunities to collaborate -- in person or online!
