I quite often wake up with snatches of a song in my head. In reading Paul McCartney's "Lyrics," I learned that this happens to him, too. I suppose it's common to all songwriters. Sometimes I'll have just the music, or a few lines of lyrics just pop into my head. For "Down to You," the first verse appeared as you hear it. I knew what I wanted to say and I had the chorus in mind before I sat down to write the rest of the lyrics.

I wrote this song during the Black Lives Matter protests in 2021, not really thinking that it could be construed as a plea for racial understanding. But then it seemed to be exactly what I had in mind all along. The idea behind the song is that no matter what situation you may be confronted with, how you react and what you do about it "all comes down to you." As the middle 8 says:

"Do what's right and let your light come shinin' through."

It should be simple. But ...

John DeCola's excellent accordion sets the scene early on. I get the image of people dining in an outdoor restaurant, and it could easily be in any country where the accordion is played: France, Mexico, Argentina, Poland. Texas? Maybe friends are talking, discussing the state of the world. But when the instrumental section kicks in, the trumpet, tuba and marching snare remind me of a funeral procession in old Italy. At the end, the procession either falls down a set of steps or marches into a wall. I'm not sure.

Biography

An accomplished veteran of the Pittsburgh, Midwest and East Coast music scenes since 1965, Dave Molter counts The Beatles as his primary influence.

"Approaching End of Usable Life" is Dave's second full-length CD. The title track debuted at #1 on Radio Candy Radio in Los Angeles in December 2021. "All the Answers, " the second single from "Usable Life" — a duet with Annemarie Picerno — debuted at #1 in March on Banks Radio Australia.

Like Dave's previous work, "Usable Life" is a mix of styles and influences, from the Who-like hard rock title track to Beatlesque ballads. It was recorded at Albey Road Studio in Pittsburgh with Al Snyder as producer as well as co-writer and keyboards player ( www.alsnydermusic.com ). It features guest appearances by many Pittsburgh area friends, including Danny Gochnour, Joey Waslousky, John DeCola, Lisa Klein Bleil, Ron Orrico, Naomi Jarvis and Dave Flodine. Nashville singer/songwriter Annemarie Picerno makes a guest appearance on the funky, bluesy rocker "All the Answers," which also features Pittsburgh's best horn section, The Soulville Horns .

Dave is a finalist in the USA Male Vocalist of the Year category for the 2022 International Singer Songwriter Association (ISSA) Awards , to be presented in August in Atlanta.

"It Was You," Dave's previous CD, was a finalist for Album of the Year at the 2021 ISSA Awards , and the title track was also nominated as Pop/Contemporary Male Song of the Year at the 7th Annual Josie Music Awards in Nashville. The CD is a compendium of styles, from Sixties power pop to country and contemporary rock. The album has produced 4 #1 indie radio hits.

"Foolish Heart," Dave's debut EP, produced four No. 1 singles since its release in September 2019. Dave's followup, "Oh Woman, Don't You Cry," also debuted at #1 in the UK three days after its release in December 2019. The title track was nominated for Single of the Year for the 6th Annual Josie Music Awards.

Says Dave: “I’m still blown away by the response from listeners to my music! I’ve heard from fans and deejays all over the world, and it’s gratifying to know that we share a common belief in the power of love expressed through music.

“John Lennon said it best in 1967: ‘All you need is love!” I still believe it!”
