She was barely twenty
but so pretty that it ached
Long hair and longer stares
followed in her wake

He was fixing cars 
and pumping gas out in the rain
Not the best provider
But she loved him all the same

They dreamed of babies
and a house out on route 9
They talked and talked
until she thought she'd lose her mind

How long does a woman have to wait
does she have to wait?
I'm like a saint to wait and wait for what is mine

That boy had better hurry up
Or he'll find out when it's too late

He was north of forty
There were stories on his face
Cleft chin and crooked grin
But he fell out of grace

She had given up
Until her shopping cart found his
Not the most romantic place
But cupid is a kid

They started talking
and they found themselves in love
The bells were ringing
But that boy couldn't wake up
