MICHAEL BEHM
Where I Belong
With “Where I Belong,” prolific B.C.-based songsmith Michael Behm has crafted another winner. Rich in melody and possessing lyrics filled with universal resonance, it’s a song that belongs on adult contemporary radio and in the hearts of its listeners.
Behm has earned a rapidly growing international following with his eloquent solo compositions, but “Where I Belong” marks a new foray into co-writing. The song is the shining outcome of a highly creative collaboration with legendary Canadian songwriter Ralph Murphy.
The Nashville-based Murphy is widely regarded as something of a songwriting guru. He has written hits for the likes of Crystal Gayle, Ronnie Milsap and Cliff Richards, and had his songs covered by such artists as Shania Twain, Randy Travis, and Don Williams.
The author of the noted book Murphy’s Laws Of Songwriting, he is now in great demand as a songwriting instructor. “I’m pretty proud of the fact I’m the first person Ralph has co-written with in about 10 years,” notes Behm. “He basically came out of retirement to work with me, and we’ll be doing more co-writing together.”
Behm had completed an earlier version of the track, but Murphy’s subsequent input in terms of the lyrics and arrangement proved invaluable. “The song went through a major left turn, and I’m thrilled with the results,” says Behm. “I put the track out to my network of people around the world and the response has been overwhelming.”
The female demographic has been especially responsive to the message of “Where I Belong.” “The basic story is of a guy who screwed up,” Behm explains. “He-chose a life of music on the road and subsequently discovers the true love of his life is back home.”
The song’s heartfelt conclusion is that “now I know wherever you are, that’s where I belong.”
Taking us through the voyage of emotional discovery is a tune of gently pensive melodic pop, one featuring Behm’s expressive and honest vocals and guitar work. This is complemented by the superb accompaniment of A-list player’s drummer Randall Stoll (Tom Cochrane), bassist John Dryden (Trooper) and pedal steel guitarist Jim Dorin. Recording of the track took place at both Vancouver’s famed Mushroom Studios and Behm’s Vancouver Island home studio. Mike Fraser mixed at The Warehouse, while the track was mastered by Brian Gardner at Bernie Grundman.
The result is another pop gem, one that belongs on your playlist.

Song is top notch and the vocals put it way over the top. No crits on this one, just praise!
