Wow! I got on today and saw comments from FP, Rapster, and WHP folllowing blog posts! Thanks!!!

Today-- continued working out another song. Then started thinking about what it takes to compose music.

Some say Mozart "saw" entire compositions at once. Doesn't work that way for me. However, pieces of compositions come out of thin air for me. I save 'em up and then see if I can put them together.

Sometimes a part will seem to lead naturally to a second. However, most of the time I have to play and play and play and play before something pops up. Other times I have to play and play and play and play, then put the instrument down. When I pick the instrument backup-- there's the piece in full glory.

I can draw many comparisons between writing words and writing music. Many times, it's a drafting process. That is, go full steam for a while and come up with a structure. Then set it aside for a day or a week-- then pick it up again, and it's obvious what parts need to be cleaned up.

In my early days of trying to write songs, if it didn't come right out-- I'd just give up. One thing I've learned is that it's VERY worthwhile to keep pieces around-- record them or whatever. Also it's worthwhile to stick with a piece, even if it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I think there's a marinating process that goes on-- and it gets especially active while what you're playing seems to be getting you nowhere. The juice is permeating the meat (as it were) and then you get something really delicious when it's done.

Anyway-- thanks for reading this. Let me know what you do to compose.

Pete - that metaphor has got me worried, you really out-shone yourself there mate.

George - you're too right. In fact, I dont ever think a song is finished - it can always get better.

george.. i really like what you said about being younger.. ditto.. if it didn't come out "perfect" on the first try back then I'd just chuck it..
forget it.. I finally learned that going back and changing things to make it better was the secret.. sometimes now i have a whole song started.. then decide what i did doesn't work and even though i really liked it.. i throw it out and start fresh.. I never would have done that before.. I would have just given up on it.. same now with my mixes.. I love these sites where we can upload a remix without deleting the whole song file.. info.. reviews etc.. most of my songs have had several remixes.. i'm always ready now to improve something.. I can go back now and change one note if necessary.. thank heaven for modern equipment and technology..
we may not have mozart's genius but we do have resources unknown to him..
I used to have problems finding a second part to go with a great first part etc.. now that's not such a concern.. getting more mature? knowing what we really want? haha.. don't know.. maybe it's the fact that we have the means of changing editing remixing any time we want.. no studio fees to pay.. no watching the clock.. man one chance to get it right.. this is costing me(us) 80 bucks an hour.. lol.. feel me? with the pressure gone
it's much easier.. no one even knows I got a new one until it's posted..
no contracts.. no deadlines.. we all know we perform best when relaxed.. who can play when they're tight?.. hey it's all easy now.. if I do a total piece of **** nobody has to know about it.. lol.. so let's all have a blast and keep the musical masterpieces coming.. lol.. cheers G and G..
