HEADPHONES.. HEADACHES.. ETC..
I've been wanting to ask you all what kind of phones you use and/or recommend? and here's 2 problems.. nobody is listening about the posting thing.. put up my NEW BLUE last night and it was gone from sight in a few minutes cause of the over-posters.. why don't guys **** off?.. lol.. just kiddin.. so we have to spam all our friends to let em know we got a new one? that sucks imho..
so anyway problem number 2.. after i post a new one i always listen in my 2 pairs of headphones.. obviously they both sound different but my new song is strange.. in the sennheisers (my main mixing phones) the lead guitar sounds balanced just fine.. but in the old sony CD380's the leads are FRIGGIN LOUD !!!! never had this problem on any other of my tunes.. just wondering if any of you hear it the 2nd way.. leads WAY too loud?.. no reviewer's have said that yet.. just wondering.. and I really would like to know about your taste in phones.. which have the best mid, highs and bass? lol.. I know this should have been a forum question but alot more read the blogs.. lol.. thanks and please check out new blue if you're so inclined.. cheers fam.. )
I'm with ya Joe...
There's still a few of us around who do it the old ways.
There is something so.......right about it,I wouldn't change even if I had the money and talent to do so.
Remember when the musicans union slogan "KEEP MUSIC LIVE" ment something entirely different
Nigel.
add some pads?.. use pitch correction?.. man what's this world coming to?.. everything sequenced.. quantized.. synthesized.. virtual guitars and saxes.. randon generators.. auto wahs.. harmonizers for instruments and voice.. pitch correcters.. man somebody complemented my guitar doubling recently and thought it was a harmonizer.. somebody asked me if all my 3-5 vocal harmonies are made with a machine.. LOL.. common guys.. give me break.. I'm old.. old school.. I do it all live.. no quantizing..
I sing and paly all my own parts.. wouldn't have it any other way.. spoil the fun of creating and doing it myself? NO WAY !! and Di.. sthe song is called NEW BLUE.. the vocals are jazzy bluesy.. notes are slurred man.. but hey. the real problem is you got to turn my **** up LOUD... low volume my vocals almost always sound out of key.. lol.. when you turn it up.. all the rich overtones shine through.. again.. turn that **** up man!!! and since when did singers have to sing in tune? I know hardly any who do.. lol.. and some who do got no funk.. no dirt man.. we talkin jazz dawg.. BLUES for christ sake.. since when do blues men have to sing in tune? it's B L U E S brother.. blues means bent.. BLUE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cheers Di.. just havin fun with you.. thanks for raining on my parade..
a dose of reality is good for the soul.. cheers..
thanks guys.. looks like I chose the right site and the right topic.. I'm reading carefully cause all you guys have great mixes too.. maybe not as good as Di.. but hey.. most of us are mortal.. lol.. Di.. change your company name to MMG.. mixing and mastering god.. no kidding.. you've got a waiting list all the way back down from heaven to the earth.. better raise your prices.. your mixes are worth their weight in gold.. so thanks ya'll for the free education.. lemme see what can i contribute besides BS.. lol.. cheers.. have a lovely weekend music family..
Joe!! i think you do just fine the way you mix and record!! phones or not. I always record and mix with phones, a pair of crappy Sennheiser with open cans. The thing is to get used with what ever you choose. With monitors you have to look for soo much other things like were you put them and reflections and stuff.
oh yeah....when i listened to New Blue...sounded just fine!
hey Joe....my two cents. I always am cross checking my mixes. Studio monitors are Event TR8XLs...love em. Use them all the time for mixing. But then for detailed work...(stereo field, fx, etc.) I use Audio Technica ATH-M90s...great flat response headphones used in plenty of studios. Bottom line IMHO...if you've got headphones you can trust for flat freq response it's always best to crosscheck your monitor mix.
Yes what Brian said.
If you have no option, get used to the tone of a pro album,so your ears become atuned to the sound on headphones.
Some software will replicate the eq values of your fav track.
I got it but I don't get it LOL
Can't use the damn thing.
D,you were born in a friggin studio. LOL...
You got a tattoo that says digitaly remastered.
Nigel.
wow.. man i feel rich.. I sure appreciate all the info guys and gal.. gonna have to study up then.. -5db flat.. sounds like changing a tire lol.. man i been reading too for years that you got to use monitors for mixing.. and listen through different gear a couple times before deciding.. all pro info here.. gonna do some homework.. mainly prices lol.. best monitors for the price would be.. ???
i use carvins h40m's. on my second pair actually! but i do not mix so not a great judge here lol. but songs sound great except for dicarlos which sound tinny . bwahahaha just kidding di!!!
Hey...Joe, Bro....Excellent post. I always listen , review and mix with my Alesis M1 Active MK2 monitors. Your song sounded superb on my set-up .:-).I do have a pair of Sony MDR-V600's that I occasionally use. My ears tend to get "tired" If I mix or listen for any length of time. I will use the ears cans, for certain things, but for me, monitors work the best......!!!! All the best ,my friend............wolf-wolf
...take the crappiest pair of ear plug style headphones...and play your favorite produced-mixed band with them. eg: Dave Matthews CD, play it alot..fimiliarize the freqencies that your hearing (with those $2.OO earphones)...and then when comes time to mix your toon...just simply...ahh...ahem...what am i doing?? no-one gonna believe...ahhh fer get it joe..LOL...carry on...bare no mind to the person behind the curtain...he's just a wierdo. (sennheizer 550 for me here...pre-mix-levels @ -5db flat response is good)
Beyerdynamic DT880. They are awesome. Just try them out. You'll be amazed what kind of new things you're going to discover in the songs you've known for decades.
Hey Joe, check out Ultrasone pro-line 750.
Expensive but they also sell B-stock. New about 400, B-stock (slightly used at demo's and such) @225.
I use 650's now, not pro-line model. I'll know more about the 750's soon..they're in the mail. They are said to be good enough to mix with...I'm not so sure 'bout that and doubt it, but they must be really nice.
thanks tony.. di.. you guys are great.. and here i am.. still in diapers.. mixing with headphones.. guess i got to save for good monitors huh? cheers..
that's very cool to cover your bio for us Di.. some folks here may not have heard it already 50 times.. lol.. we do love ya bro.. one of a kind.. lemme check those 580s then..
I thought the golden rule was NEVER mix through headphones?
Well,I guess the monkey got better ehadphones than me
Mikomi,9.99 uk pounds.
Might explain alot huh?
Nigel
thanks tsar.. that's a relief to hear it sounded ok that way.. on big speaks and all.. try my new remix.. it's much better now I'm convinced..
cheers.. doobie brother..
Di.. thanks brother.. that was the answer i guess i was looking for.. somebody commiting strongly for one particular phone..
maybe there's an equivolent AKG?.. mine say sennheiser hd280 por 6.4 ohms on em.. lol.. but i'll be online looking at the 580s soon..
margot has the hd 25sp sennheiser and she says she loves em!.. thanks for the lovely posting Di.. cheers bro.. see if anybody wants to argue
..
My pc has a 200-watt Aiwa power amp and 4 Aiwa speakers, and it sounded ok through them when I reviewed it the first time....................
Of course I have a propensity for loud guitars
hey hi geen.. thanks for making the phones exchange scene.. lol.. when you record.. i hope that means we can look forward to new from you..
thanks for the feedback and info.. love to rico..
tsar man thank you brother.. but after reading that you have some sony headphones as well i dashed off and did a remix just for good measure.. lol.. just posted it.. hope it's sounding balanced now.. cheers brothers..
clay thanks brother.. that's what i'm hopin.. that nobody hears it like I do on these sonys.. lol.. cheers..
hi Joe,
I use Sony MDR V600's, there not too bad..a little big on the bottom end but thats worth checking. When I'm mixing I'll use them to check panning stuff or spots where the mix is lower. From there I'll check through my Adams monitors and then the Bryston house system, at really loud volume..my favorite part of the process. When I'm listening to someones track I'll only use the cans when its late and I don't want to wake family up...hah. I'd rather listen to folks tracks the old fashion way, the good old home stereo.
btw, no way would I miss your track, I'll be passing by soon.
Always appreciate your encouragement listening to my ****.
Ed
Joe: all I can say is it sounded great through my Senn HD280 Pros and on my 'puter speakers -- as you say, different, but I didn't have a loud guitar issue.
thanks guys.. much appreciated..
hey joe--yup-- again to me-- sharing ones music means listening to others as well--goes back to common courtesy multi song posters--first thing i do is see if they have written any reviews--if not--blow right by--its principle to me--thats all
headphones-man i dont know--i always listen to head phone mix than my bose stereo-than my van stereo than upstairs cheapy--usually the guitar is always loud-when it makes my ears bleed im content-lol---your stuff is always cool to my ears--there is always room to go up or down in your mixes-sometimes put that six string lead right on top--sometimes underneathe--variety is good in my opinion-makes each music-song unique--
ed.. that's great info.. thanks for sharing.. and i was afraid of that.. playing it through monitors.. I'm terrified of monitors man.. lol..
my 89 swiss franc behringer monitors make anything sound bad.. especially my mp3 quality mixes lol.. cheers thanks ed...
