Roots and Threads

Roots and Threads

I've been thinking, as always, about pulling the threads, digging down to the roots of my own musical interests and passions, prompted most recently by some of Vesa's terrific style recombinations and Rapster's evident fidelity to being open to new styles, genres, and tools. These guys and a host of others have wildly ecclectic tastes and a fearless drive to experiment. They're also blessed with a broad knowledge of what music is and can be -- art, self-expression, emotional amplifier, medicine, metaphor, inspiration... and a few hundred other functions and rewards that may suit a particular time or place or person better that those. They've cultivated what I think of as Great Ears, which I'm betting grew out of a lifetime of listening carefully to everything they can get their hands on, seeing the connections, filing the sounds away consciously and unconsciously.

I'm not trying to get all mystical here really... my own love of making music came out of a desire to sound as much as I could like the Rolling Stones as a teenager. Noticing that someone named Willie Dixon wrote Little Red Rooster, i started pulling my first threads more than thirty years ago and ever since have dug down through the roots of rock to the blues and beyond. Eventually I dug back to the very earliest recordings, where the lines between between traditions blur. Blues and Jazz are one. Blues and Country are one. Cajun, Acadian, Celtic and more are one. Skip James, Hank Williams and hard labor chain gang hollers on the Alan Lomax field recordings are one. Hopi drummers and Highlanders in New Guinea banging on logs. Joni and Mingus. Johnny Cash and Beck. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello -- not just collaborators, but soul mates deep inside. Heck, Forest Pygmy singing sounds a whole lot like Tuvan throat singers. And on and on...

It truly is a wonderfful thing that the music of solitary musicians, crafting alone for personal enjoyment and fulfillment -- alongside the music of humanity's heritage -- can be heard and enjoyed on a global basis from right there where you're sitting.

Pull the threads. Listen up, ya'll.

Hey You!

By Admin, 2008-07-07

I just wanted to take a moment and thank everyone for all of the reviews that are being done. We have a ton of new music coming in and I see a lot of reviews being done. For that I thank you! I never want this site to be a storage bin for people's music. Maybe the free account upgrade is helping? If so we may have to do this periodically lol.

I also wanted to say it was nice to meet a lot of you Saturday Night in the Chatroom for Mike K's Saturday Night Rocks Radio Broadcast. This is a weekly 4 hour long live show where Mike plays music from the Mixposure Artists. This week he featured my fellow admin ReaperSG aka RWK during the Mix Radio - Center Stage Presentation. It was cool getting the inside scoop on Rick :). If you are free this Saturday Night, please stop in and say hello!

If you have not visited the Forums as of yet, please stop by and Introduce yourself. Also if you have heard a great artist on Mixposure, please let us know in Nigel and Brian's Corner. Maybe your band is already mentioned in there?

Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions or you can ask any of of mods or admins.

Additionally, I wanted to thank all of you that have upgraded and supported the site. It is greatly appreciated!

Modifying Your Artist Page

By Admin, 2008-07-07

One of the cool things about the Mixposure Artist Theme is that you can customize it.

In your Control Panel, click the Customize Your Site icon. This displays your theme layout colors. If you want to add a customized background, upload an image to Photoucket and link to it from within the theme. There are a variety of things you can do in here, play around with it to get a feel for it. If you are proficient with HTML, you can also click on the advanced view for more options.

One of the other options is to click on View Shared Skins. This can also be a great starter point for some people. You can use one of the existing shared skins and modify it to however you want.

I am thinking we need to do a contest for coolest theme. Anyone up for this?

Mixposure, gah!

By Zenon, 2008-07-07

Wow, I can't believe this place is back up and running. Honestly, I loved the site before but now there's so much more that you can do and I'm loving every second of it.

I just wish I was in a better mood, is all. I thought that I was just feeling a little strange and cold because it's been raining for the past 3 days and it's supposed to keep raining for the rest of the week. But nope; today I find out that I'm full-fledged sick. Perfect, eh. Went to bed at 2 AM and woke up at 6, because there was no way my body would let me sleep longer.

Why do you guys care about my health though? Well, in all honesty, you probably don't. But for the few people on this site that like my music, I'm planning on doing something a little something extra for this site. And by something extra, I mean that I'm eventually going to remove all the tracks I put up here and put up new pieces that I will have written exclusively for Mixposure. And they're all going to be Goa trance I've already got one out of... I believe it was 6 songs completed (and it's named Infablue; it's really cool ). Being sick though is making it terribly hard to write music though, you know, with the whole headaches and uncomfort.

You guys keep it easy here at Mixposure;

-Zenon
