Once upon a time there was a man

making his own music, playing his guitar

ev’ry night another motel, 

another stage and another bar

Ev’ry night another woman

waited behind an unlocked door

and when the show was over

he walked to another room on another floor

He knew the night would soon be over

and he was about to lose his inner spark

He is alone with his memory

Alone with his memory, alone in the dark

Same old man sits on a parkbench

it is cold and it starts to rain

he’s had a few drinks, and the darkness surrounds him

and he’s sure he can no longer stand the pain

All the good times are over

and he cannot find his mistake

when he plays his tune the house is empty

and his soul is full of ache

Playing his music is all he ever used to do

he feels that he’s lost his inner spark

His decision is that it’s too late to start over

So he sits with his gun alone in the dark
