The Joker And The Straight Man
The happy man wakes to find he’s feeling strongly blue
He smiles all day, he hopes but finds it doesn’t change his mood
Questioning the meaning of his life, he walks and disappears into the night
Nobody noticed the change,
And nobody thought it was strange that he was gone
Life is the joker
Death plays the straight man
And we’re all rolling on the floor
There’s so much to laugh about
Yes, life is the joker
And death plays the straight man
The driven man and his Rolex stop at 8:05
He hails a cab, rushes home with flowers for his wife
Presses on the doorbell like a guest,
He reads the tear-stained letter his wife left
He hadn’t noticed the change
He didn’t think it was strange, that she was gone
Life is the joker
Death plays the straight man
And we’re all rolling on the floor
There’s so much to laugh about
Yes, life is the joker
And death plays the straight man
The broken man stops to have a drink, or maybe two
He’s late for work, his boss doesn’t like his attitude
He disconnects the cables from his life
Opens the window, steps outside
Nobody noticed a change,
And nobody thought it was strange, that he was gone
Life is the joker
Death plays the straight man
And we’re all rolling on the floor
There’s so much to laugh about
Life is the joker
Death plays the straight man
Very creative Eric...I enjoyed listening, even though I hate thinkin' of that old Grim Reaper (I'm beginning to get old..) 👍😉
I like that you’re stretching in different directions and this is very musical direction indeed I like the story I’m still trying to quite figure out what it is. I hear an underlined story here but I’m not sure what it is. I love the peace and I love the way you perform it and the changes and that piano part is just beautiful with the bass. Cheers, my buddy and a great new song.
A top song Eric. The changes we don't notice in people and, to late, we let the grim reaper steal them for his collection. The joker carries on laughing at the constant irony within those situations. Love the musical arrangements and as always a top quality vocal.
Rob
Through the first verse this reminds me of Harry Chapin's style (a compliment). But when the chorus hits it leaves Harry C. behind and it becomes BLJ's own unique style. Great vocals (all of them) and the music builds and is mixed well. I like it !
