When I was about 11-12 years old I had an uncle that lived very close to me. His girlfriend was Sue Veliet, Captain Beefhearts mom. She lived with my uncle alot of the time especially on the weekends. We would go to her house alot also and spend time with granny, Don's grandmother. Sue was a wonderful lady always a smile on her face and I became very close to the family . In my teens she would tell me story's about stuff that Don and Frank Zappa would get into. One day when Don was home (he wasn't home much) but he played me a tape of songs from the Safe as Milk album without the vocals . He was working on that album at that time. He and John French gave me a stack of bumper stickers that came with the album and had a picture of a little baby face on them and said "Safe as milk" I stuck about a hundred of the all over the school bus and the junior high school. As I got older Sue became like a mom to me and my uncle a father. I worked at the shoe store he owned in lancaster Ca.. Sue was invited to Frank zappa's house to view his movie and invited me but my uncle wouldn't let me off work he just didn't get it. He knew them both also and thought of them as a couple mixed up kids lolo.Sue brought me a note from Frank that said hi rick sorry I missed you and signed F.zappa. Oh well that's about enough for now I'll ad more later.
