Mixing and Mastering
Hi All! <br /><br />There was a conversation going on in the http://www.imusicscene.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=93 - Help Mix My Song Forum - so I thought I would send this out this morning. For those of you who may not know, we started this forum about 4 months ago. The idea behind it is simple. Not all of us are audio engineers. We wanted to have a place where people could upload their wav files and have someone else mix their song. <br /><br />In today's Internet Music world, you pretty much have to be a jack of all trades when it comes to home recording. Yes it is easy to lay down a couple of tracks and do a quick mix and post it up. However, we all know when listening to our favorite bands CD that there is so much more going on behind the scenes than just the bass, drums, keys, vocals and guitar tracks. Mixing and Mastering is an art form. There is a lot of high end audio equipment out there to help make a song sound pro. Not everyone has these tools or knows how to use them effectively. Just because someone hands you a scalpel, it does not make you a surgeon! So that is where this forum came from. <br /><br />In reading some of the reviews to songs out there, the one thing that is consistent is comments regarding the mix. Trust me I have been there before. I have listened to my "best" mix and then heard Floridamusic's mix and they sound like completely different songs. I guess this is the difference when someone who owned a recording studio mixes it versus someone who just started mixing in the last few years. <br /><br />We have had several people take advantage of this and they have been extremely impressed with the results. I am just surprised more people have not taken advantage of this. I do not know of any other site that is offering to mix people's songs for free. You may not like the new mix, but what do you have to lose? The only thing I can think of is the time it takes to upload the music. This process accomplishes a few things. The first being that you get to hear your song in a new light. The second being that the audio engineers get to work with different music and improve their skills. The third being that you have the ability to ask questions and learn how the mix was accomplished. <br /><br />We have retained our old site name and server so that people can upload all wav files to this address: http://www.guitaristworks.com/mix/ . The person mixing the song can retrieve the files from http://www.guitaristworks.com/mix/uploads/ . The directories get deleted regularly so grab the files asap. <br /><br />I wanted to remind people that this option is available. If you would like to experiment with a song, please post a message in the forum http://www.imusicscene.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=93. If everyone would do me a favor and if you do have a song remixed, post the original and the new version in your thread so people can hear the differences. You have nothing to lose. What are you waiting for? <br /><br />Also the Same Song Title Madness is next Saturday. Please visit the thread if you need more information! http://www.imusicscene.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=99 <br /><br />I am also going to post this message on the main iMS Page so people can comment if you so desire. <br /><br />Thanks for supporting iMS!<br />Dazed<br />
guess i'd have thought it too good to be true that anyone with FM's expertise or peter's or others would be willing to take on "just anybody's" songs.. thought it was in the family only.. man that is too kind of you to offer.. don't get me started.. i've got 100+ songs all in need of superior mixes.. lol.. when do we get started? cheers..
I just posted a before & after in the Help with My Mix forum. Peter Mercer did the remix as a demonstration of a hot mix. I'm quite impressed with his results. Hope you check it out.

FloridaMusic just wrapped up one of mine, but I neglected to post my "before" mix here. I will do that next, then y'all canb go back to my page and play the FlaMusic mix and see what you think. I know I am very happy with what he brought to that song. He also is working one I posted this past summer, and I'm anxious to hear how that comes out. That one is "DAMNED IF I DO (LOVE YOU)", and while it sounds okay with my mix, I know it can really come to life with a pro mix. Like "A SONG FOR YOU," "DAMNED" is pretty much an all-acoustic song, except for drums and bass. It's a very special song, that I wrote for my wife, so it's a song I want to have a very special mix done on.
What I've done with FlaMusic is to give him total freedome to do what he likes with it. His results on A SONG FOR YOU gives me total faith in his ability and musical sense. I can do alrright in a basic way, but he raised the production to that next better level.
Anyway, I have had an offer from one of the other guys here as well, and it certainly wouldn't hurt to see how different folks handle our songs. If people don't want to submit a song for someone to mix, and free at that, they're nuts. But by the same token, we should make our talents available to these folks as well. Now, maybe FlaMusic or some of the others, don't need a guitar player on their tracks, but offering to pitch in on some of their tracks is only fair. In my case, I will be doing some acoustic bits on at least one song for Walt shortly.
I'm rambling, so let me shut this down and get that first version of the song Walt mixed for me loaded. Let me know what you all think of the before (which is the best mix I could get, given the limitations of my gear and minimal experieince).

Mmmm...
I am not suprise that D appeared LOL
It's not a question of "Affording" to be able to do it for free, different lives, different reasons.
VERY kind of the gentleman to offer his services.
I am suprised that he hasn't been snowed under....
I think what would also enhance his service would be a track specific commentary, detailing just what was done.
Give a mana fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish.....
Best wishes, and a GREAT service to be offering!!
Nigel.
You are not kidding on time. I know Floridamusic has invested 40-60 hours on one song. If people are not interested in hearing an alternative mix to their songs, I can understand. But we might as well kill the forum and I can dump that server and stop paying for it.
Was wondering if Floridamusic would like to mix some of the tracks that
PYRAMIS will be recording in the next few months ?
We will get the master files from the sessions and let him have a go at it,if he's interested.
Would be nice to have two versions to compare, and to hear the difference
another pair of ears could make.
Sorry,I don't have a mixing and mastering service I'm trying to push,so I can't leave a web address.....lol !!!
Peace,
