Dare I say Reviews?

I hate the thought of even bringing up reviews but I was asked about this again so I thought I would make the change for those interested.

So members have said Mixposure is very kind on reviews when they were really looking for critical reviews. To try and resolve this issue, we have come up with the following solution. When creating a song, you will see a field called Review Feedback Type. There will be 3 entries in the drop down Normal, Constructive and Critical. If you are fine with the normal Mixposure Review Process, leave the default value of normal. If you choose any of the other three options, on the review form an image will appear with the review type requested. Not sure if we need all these values? Thoughts?

Now the one thing I will say is that if you request a Critical Review, please do not expect roses and a card. Mixposure has many professional musicians and if requested, they can and will critique a song to your expectations. If you do not like a review however, please just delete it. Sending a message to the reviewer telling them they do not know what they are talking about means you have chosen the wrong type of review feedback to receive.

Now the good thing about this is that if you are a beginning musician, you probably do not want to put down Critical for your review type. You might want to put down Kind until you work on your skills!

Please feel free to comment!

I'm good~! There are some folks that wouldn't change a thing and others looking for constructive critisism. Nice to have options. The best of both worlds :)

Hey Anthony!

Really nothing has changed. If you leave the default value which my guess will be the norm, nothing has changed. We just have a few members who want to know more details. I can understand this if you are getting close to mastering phase or trying to be radio friendly.

Funny because one of the things I like so much about mixposure is that everyone is so kind on the reviews! Nothing ruins a good feeling about a song you've made then to have someone rip it apart; I've been on other sites where ALL the reviews are like that.

I always prefer to look at the positives when I review someone else's song. Why make them feel like crap by pointing out what I don't like?

I say glass half-full. No need to change the way Mixposure does its reviews. Its what I love about this site (and all the free music!)

lol@ David... and his Constructive criticism certainly seems, well... constructive.

I would like to get a clarification and we can make a popup out of the image.

Realistically what I think about the two is this..

Constructive - If it were my song, I would work on the hook and make it stronger as well as adding a bridge to the second chorus. Shorten the song to 4 minutes since 10 minute epics are difficult.

Critical - Mix needs a lot of work. There is no definition in anything. The singer is pitchy through most of the song and those need to be fixed. If you are trying to make this radio friendly, these things need to be changed before I would thing any station would play it. Musically I think the sound is there. If the mix is cleaned up and proper panning techniques are used, this song will be a monster.

Now on either of those reviews, I would probably use them as a normal review. But not everyone is the same.

I can recall some of the slightly interesting debates that have ranged around this subject in the past.

The idea is simply this, if someone wants a critical review, then the review becomes exactly that. Your work can be criticized maybe harshly. But hopefully a constructive suggestion can be used to counter any critique.

What has to be remembered is that a review is primarily the opinion of the reviewer, if you ask for an honest/constructive opinion. Expect an occasional kickback.

The definition between constructive and critical is thin, but I can see what is trying to be accomplished.

It's a good idea.

A good addition. It lets the member chose his/her medicine so to speak. I think stressing that if you ask and don't receive a review you like, don't blame the reviewer works for all the categories. It puts the responsibility in the members control. Good idea but I think three choices would work ie. Normal, Constructive, Critical

What's the difference between Constructive and Critical?

I'm not too sure about how to review between those two.
I think it is a sound idea,I just need a little clarification LOL

If you think about it,all you need is one OPTION

You already have "Normal",which can eb anything the reviewer wants, and normaly on Mix it's witha good spirit.

So all you really need is constructivly critical.

Job done?

Well I think it is important not to get bogged down in the detail.

So,simple description when you want to select, and go for it.
No description will be perfect,so just go for your best judgement.

To me constructive and critical means pretty much the same thing or at least very closely related. Maybe change Critical to Technical?

Ok thinking on it some more, I would use Constructive and Technical. but that's just me. It would certainly leave a lot of confusion out.

A wonderful solution.
A site is all about choices, and this adds greatly for the many who do seek help from their peers.
I would be more than willing to give any advice I can to those asking.

Top notch thinking mate

Really there are two choices. If you select Normal that will not put any notice on the review and it is business as usual. For now I will leave it as constructive and critical. I do not want to keep changing it every few hours lol.

As I said one is looking for Constructive Feedback, which I think to me is really saying what are the pro's and con's of this tune from a a variety of angles.

A Critical review I feel is more from the standpoint of this song is close to being finalized and I am closing the book on it. What is missing? Hear any mistakes? EQ Levels ok? Panning is good? Volume levels ok? This is really the details of the tune.

Realistic approch to the muso who wants to hear a critical review from and other muso/songster/lyricist/producer...yes.,this would be a great idea for those who want it. If the choice is clear...it's what they would be are asking for.

I wasn't sure Dazed if you wanted a regular review of the post or a constructive or critical one lol (just pulling your leg).
Regular: Fantastic idea Dazed, you are the best indie king in cyberspace.
Consructive: I think this is a good idea. I agree probably just regular and constructive would be adequate but this is fine.
Critical: How dare you change the way it's always been. I finally feel there is one thing I can count on in my life and now it all changes. Man... what a world, what a world.
