Please remember that in order to post any covers, you must obtain a license to use the material. This is an often overlooked area on many indie sites and I am seeing more and more pop up here. this is the same thing im finding reap. it don't matter what country you acquire the licence in, as long as you have a licence!

that's cool!

that's exactly what i'm asking... can you obtain the rights to cover a song written that descends from any other country,
the rights obtained from an agency in that country, and those rights be upheld everywhere in the world?

thanks for getting back,

Dig, as far as I know, yes. I think there must be such an institution in every country. But, as far as they would be valid outside that country - I have no idea. In other words if I'd obtain the rights for a Canadian Cover tune, I am not sure if this would be valid in the US - or vice versa. You know what I mean?

So, perhaps Dazed knows the answer to that: If I'd cover a Canadian rock song, or whatever, and post it here on Mixposure with a Canadian copyright license (or whatever you call these) since it's not in HFA's database ... would that be valid?

Hmmm ...

Yup, I too think it's important, and it should go hand in hand with one's music production if it's a cover tune.

On a separate note: HFA might be the place to go; as with so many other official things, though, it is very American-centered. And that's just not right.
Minor Canadian, British, or let alone different language tunes are not covered at all! So - the only Blue Sahara tune in our repertoire which is a cover song is not covered by the HFA, since it's not in there ...

Wish I'd finally find a great American service which would cover the whole world.

Food for thought ...

Heinz.

this is very good to know! the wife wants to do a few songs but was thinking the first one or two should be a cover of something. she's never sang into a mic before so this is all very new to her, and as i said a cover may be the way to go!

she really has a great voice, just not trained yet!

thanks for the info, will put it to good use, hopefully soon!

As one that has some cover tunes posted at Mixposure I totally agree Dazed. It's very easy to obtain the digital license from The Harry Fox Agency and it can cost as little as $17 per song. All you need to do is set up an account with HFA and put in the pertinent information and you're good to go. That way nobody gets fined or sued for copyright infringement. It takes about 5 minutes or less.

Yep,agreed.
Without a licence for EACH SONG,it is breaking copywrite laws.

You might have to attach a consequence Dazed like other sites do.
If found,page deletion.

i know this is probably going to sound really dumb air, but I'm going to ask it anyway because i don't know... honestly! and i'm hoping you can answer this.

doesn't every country have it's own copy write and patent division within there own government?
