color: #c0c0c0;">Traditionally distortion devices achieve their design objectives by either amplifying there inputs to levels that cause the amplifying components to clip or use diodes to clip the input signal at lower levels and then provide sufficient gain to drive any amplifier to the point of extreme discomfort. In either event these traditional distortion devices can only provide a distortion based on a clipped or what is very often referred to as an overdrive condition. Although there are many circuit nuances from brand to brand for the most part all basically create their distortion by clipping the wave form. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Century Gothic', 'ITC Avant Garde', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #c0c0c0;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Century Gothic', 'ITC Avant Garde', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #c0c0c0;">The Siltube Xcitr also has this capability however it is also capable of generating tube like distortion at low gain levels or what we for lack of a better term call clean. Many of us always marvel at the warmth and richness of tube type amplifiers when play in what we perceive as clean. Nothing could be further from the truth if in fact we are expecting a faithful and accurate reproduction of the input signal. Inherent to tube amplifiers even when not driven to saturation or clipping is a fairly high degree of harmonic distortion and to an even greater degree when compared even to a relatively low cost Solid State Amps from the past 20 years. For the most part Solid State Amps are more accurate and deliver much less harmonic distortion when they are not overdriven or clipped. Of course when Solid State Amps are overdriven they produce enormous amounts of distortion however it is not pleasing to the ear at all. Now on the other hand tubes distort in a much more pleasing and recognizable fashion. This is largely due in fact to the nature of the tube it self and the components required to allow the tube to deliver its power to the load (Speakers). The output transformer is yet another key component required by tube amplifiers which contributes significantly to the non-intended harmonic content of the output signal of the tube amplifier. If your a purist this is not acceptable however if you are a guitarist or bassist this distortion is precisely what you desire as it contributes significantly to the signature sounds we have all come to know and love. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Century Gothic', 'ITC Avant Garde', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #c0c0c0;">The Siltube Xcitr design requirements mandated that we not only provide a great overdriven sound but a rich warm clean tube amplifier sound as well. Accomplishing this is a rather formidable engineering task as this type of distortion cannot be introduced by clipping the input waveform. With this as our design criteria we developed circuitry capable of introducing distortion on the rising and falling edges of the input signal while still maintaining the dynamic range of the input signal. Although esoteric in nature our proprietary circuitry achieves our design objectives.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Century Gothic', 'ITC Avant Garde', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #c0c0c0;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Century Gothic', 'ITC Avant Garde', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #c0c0c0;">Yet another design objective was provide an easy to use, broad range and agile device. In meeting this design objective we provide the user with three controls per channel; gain, symmetry and level. These three controls allow the user to dial in a virtual cornucopia of useable settings that provide signal enhancement from clean to scream. Even though the Xcitr may be used as a stand alone device it is FX friendly and will serve to add yet another dimension to the FX devices the player, performer or studio may already employ. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Century Gothic', 'ITC Avant Garde', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #c0c0c0;">In practice it is best to place the Siltube Xcitr at the end of the FX signal chain or in other words at the input of the amplifier, mixing console or preamp. The Siltube should be adjusted for the desired effect as detected by your ears as there is no right or wrong to achieving what the user desires. If you are using a solid state amp or mixing console a new warmth and glow will become apparent when using the Xcitr at low gain levels. Tube amplifiers although already developing a fair amount of distortion on their own will also benefit as more of what we know and love about tube type sounds is added right at the input. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Century Gothic', 'ITC Avant Garde', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #c0c0c0;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #00ff00; font-family: 'Century Gothic', 'ITC Avant Garde', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #c0c0c0;">After using the Siltube Xcitr it will more than likely become impossible for the user to leave home without it. This 2 Channel device will afford the user a new dimension in sonic performance. The Siltube Xcitr is intended primarily for guitarists and bassist's however it can be used for just about any instrument requiring amplification and you might even like what it does for vocals and drums. The latter application may require the Xcitr be inserted in the signal chain where there is sufficient gain to allow the Xcitr to deliver all of its potential with regard to sonic enhancement.
