Looks like it is time to do the next site song. The question is, what do we want it to be? Acoustic/Electric? Same Song Title Madness? Something else?

We had a lot of songs submitted for the Country Songs and I would like to get a great turnout for this one. So please chime in with what you would like to do!

If you have never done one of these, here is how it works.

Same Song Title Madness: We post a poll with song names suggested by members and vote on a winner. Everyone will then have 4-6 weeks to write s song using the chosen song title. Vocals are not mandatory but obviously help sell the tune a bit better. The outcome is 10-20 songs with various genres all using a common theme.

Acoustic-Electric requires an acoustic guitar be added to a song. This usually aids in collaborating with other artists on Mixposure. We can also incorporate the SSTM and make it acoustic-electric.

So let's hear what you guys want to do!

Thanks,

Todd

A side song...time for a new one? that sounds to me, like producing the next Vol 121 cd, istn it ?

Whats about let the space come.....do you need a genre for it ??
A lot of great bands having sitar, sax, trombone, drums, keys, moog...natural things....or what you want in their songs....and it was unique. Do we need a genre ?? We selling cars ?

Think its time to think different...what Indie Music should be....beyond that commerce, that could be a great chance for a reunion of free music, take it and be free in mind all!!

Thanks Stephan, Another idea I had which might be a lot of fun:
we could build a song by having a contest for the best sounding drums/percussion only track, picked by a contest, everyone takes the track and works with it leaving it in its original state/arrangement, persons may chose to work and collaborate using that track as the base, it would keep it together...maybe.

so it would be a "same drum track madness" thing

Bill B - that's a great point about acoustic instruments being more than guitar. Maybe we should say any acoustic instrument that is mic'd directly in the recording process (without being amplified first), which could include guitar, banjo, mandolin, violin, Djembe, bongos, congas, sax, clarinet, oboe, etc. I think the interesting potential here is to set some basic parameters and let the artists figure out how to create something, whatever it might be, within those parameters. Anyway, just a thought.

Okay I get it quote- "Acoustic-Electric requires an acoustic guitar be added to a song. This usually aids in collaborating with other artists on Mixposure. We can also incorporate the SSTM and make it acoustic-electric. "

I dont feel that acoustic guitar players should get special treatment? Sounds political to me.
I dont think that would encourages site collaborations.

I'd rather see it incorporate ALL acoustic instruments if thats the direction it goes in.
What about the poor banjo or mandolin players sitting back on the sidelines.

I think a simple contest which requires all songs to be original song collaborations by 2 or more persons NOT HAVING PREVIOUSLY posted collaborations would be the most interesting.

Anyway whats ever decided, as always, you can count me in.
As for change, thats my dime.

The simple way to do it is that it must be a collaboration, i.e. with at least 2 mix artists. As far as genre goes, that would be the choice of the collaborators, as long as it is acoustic/electric.

I dont understand the acoustic-- electric thing...I mean drums are acoustic, do you mean unplugged "sounding" guitars?

I like that, a good idea we'd have to figure out how to choose?
I dont know about the acoustic/electric thing, what about something like genre, for example persons from different genres would be added into a "pot" then the names drawn out, as long as the persons genre was different they go for it, for example, we could get a reggae version of a country tune or a country version of a metal song...whatever, something like that? Im sure if we persist we can find something to spice things up.

.hey!!thats it!!! we do our own version of a spice girls tune
:-))

How about something like doing a cover? We each suggest a song, any song it doesnt have to be our own, we then vote, the song chosen is the one we all have to do our own take on.
Now that could be fun and the song chosen would get some interesting versions. No holds barred versions accepted.

Some suggestions:

1. Acoustic songs without drums
2. Songs less than 2 minutes
3. Songs that incorporate a kazoo
4. Acapella songs (voices only)
5. Songs of a certain genre
6. Instrumentals
7. Or acoustic songs without drums that incorporate a kazoo that are less than 2 minutes using only voices of a certain genre that are completely instrumental.......LOL just kidding but you get my point of something different from the normal SSTM theme.

I would like to see something else besides the same song title theme. It's had many runs at Mix and something different, in my opinion, would draw a better turnout. Look at the success of the Country Song Submission. Sure, the $100 prise was a factor but I think the different theme played a big part in the participation level.

Just a thought.

If the idea is to encourage collabs, why not make it a Mixpo collab contest?

I think it should be just pick instrument of your choice play and sing based on originality, simplicity, with a same song title no background additions ?

I like the SSTM idea. Also blending it with acoustic-electric would be good but IMHO too easy for many of the artists on here (I have a Variax so could do both on the same guitar). If we did it as an SSTM tied to a three way (e.g. Acoustic-electric-keys/synth) it might encourage more collabs.

Same Song titles were fun but I think it should just be a simple choice to pick the title like for example
the headline of the new york times on some day in the future like april 1 for example..
so what ever that headline is that day-has to be the title of the song...or something like that.

Keep the ideas coming! I would like to have this setup by April 1st. Makes me wonder about incorporating April Fools Day hehe.

Bill - I like the idea of a cover but since Mixposure has always been about original music, I think that would be contradicting hehe.

Cracking me up Farrell. I had an idea a few years back about doing a site song with no musical instruments per se. You could use spoons, a plastic bucket for drums or any item that was around the house. I thought it would really mess with people and really make them think about being creative on a different level.

Well, Artistaically it makes sense as we would be covering original music from this site, we'd have to permisson from the artist(or would we?), everyone suggests a different song, then we vote...we get one song, then its done by the entrents 40 different ways, there would only be a few rules --like using the base progression and lyric is a must -
a prize to the original artist and covering artist.

Actually not a bad idea IMHO. I would only change two things; While I agree that the lyric must be the same (or VERY close) I think the progression should be open and fair game AND, if you suggest a song you must post a review for that song, AND if you submit an entry to the contest you must post a review of the selected original. (OK that was three, I flunked math)

03/27/12 10:04:16AM @:

PS, it would generate mucho play as folks looked for a song to submit, then everyone would be listening to all of them to vote on the one they want to do, then of course the final product,
also a prize could be given to the person who suggested the song as well as the original artist and of course grand prize for the best cover.
Artists could submit their own songs if they want but not have to.

Glad you like the idea but if the base progression was fair game then it would just be a lyric thing...?
I think it would have to have at least the same base, jazzing in the form of substitutiiopns and alterations would be okay, no rules on metre, arrangement or instrumentation, you could even allow for additional progressions in a part of the song as an "open" area for improvisation or what ever.
