(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) — George Gruhn’s guitar shop in Nashville is a kind of mecca for fine, vintage musical instruments, but even Gruhn is blown away by the latest addition to his inventory. He says it’s the very first production model Fender Stratocaster ever made.
“This is special,” Gruhn told The Associated Press. “It’s not special as memorabilia because it was owned by anybody special. But it is special because this is effectively like having the right Rembrandt or Van Gogh or Da Vinci. It’s special because of what it is and who did this. Not because of who owned it.”
The sunburst-finish Strat bears the serial number 0100. Although some Strats have lower numbers that begin with 0001, Gruhn says they actually were manufactured later in that first year of production. He says the number-one Strat was sold to an amateur who evidently took good care of it.
“This one didn’t go to a famous performer,” he said. “It actually went to Joe Blow Public. But it stayed in good condition, hardly used. And then, a bit over 30 years ago, Richard Smith, who is a curator today at the museum of the city of Fullerton, Calif., where this guitar was made, bought this guitar.”
Smith purchased the guitar from the original owner. Gruhn said the record-keeping on the guitar is superb because Smith is considered one of the foremost experts on Stratocasters. Smith is selling it on consignment through Gruhn’s Guitars.
The Fender Stratocaster, first produced in 1954, has been described as a guitar that changed the world. When it first arrived, its streamlined, space-age contours seemed strange and perplexing to some. But the kids knew what to do with it. Buddy Holly played one. So did Jimi Hendrix, when he transformed the psychedelic experience into sound a decade later. Bob Dylan chose a Stratocaster for his revolutionary electric set, when he fired a defiant shot at tradition during the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.
And 60 years after it was created, the much copied design of the Stratocaster has hardly changed.
According to Gruhn, Stratocasters are the single most popular, best-selling electric guitars on the planet.
Over the years, a fair number of vintage Strats have sold for $100,000-plus, with some approaching $1 million. Eric Clapton’s “Blackie” sold for $959,500 in 2004 and recently the Stratocaster that Dylan played at Newport sold for a record $965,000.
However, Gruhn says the very first production model Strat is something like a national treasure.
“I consider this to be one of the most important pieces of American, truly iconic industrial design, as well as musical instrument design, that we can find today,” he said. “It’s a piece of art, it’s a piece of industrial design, it’s a piece of musical history. And it’s part of our national heritage.”
He added, “I think it belongs in a museum ultimately. On the other hand, I don’t like to see them put in a museum setting where they will never again be touched without white gloves. Even for the Stradivari quartet at the Library of Congress, it does get played. They don’t play those instruments every day, but they are used for concerts. And this instrument is a wonderful sounding guitar. It plays great.”
Just a heads up we are testing the new audio players. There are some bugs we are seeing so we will revert back to the old players shortly.
Congrats to Sam Houston for being the Mixposure.com Artist of the Month!! Please check out his music and his Bio below!
Bio:
I played on stage for about 30 or so years. I have played with such people as Roy Clark, Jana Jae, Reba McEntire's guitar player, little brother of Brooks and Dunn's guitar player, and many others. I've been on the radio and TV and was close to a record deal. But, I finally just got pissed off at the music business in general, and especially country music. Country isn't country anymore and people don't seem to know what country is these days. Also, being on the road constantly really wears you down. I wanted to go fishing or hang out with my friends but couldn't because I always had somewhere I had to be. When I finally quit, I could look at my schedule and see where I was going to be two years ahead. That's just ridiculous! So, I quit. I still have a lot of my equipment though. I have 24 guitars, 5 amps, a bass, and a bunch of PA equipment. So, maybe one of these days I'll start up again, but on my own terms this time.
A note about my music. If you are looking for a polished studio sound, you won't find it here. I don't have fancy recording equipment and choose, at the moment, to not have a band. It's just me. My music is rough, raw, and real. But I ask you to really listen to the songs. I promise that my songs are truthful, honest, and from the heart. However, I believe this is the core of music. Everybody should put themselves out there like this. Because that's what I'm doing.....putting myself out there. I've made many recordings in studios when I was playing full time. But there are no studios involved in my music now. No studios to hide mistakes or make a song "pretty" or have the perfect mix to fool the listener's ear into believing they like what they here. My music is raw but very honest.
If you want to know me......just listen to my songs. Every song is true and has actually happened at some point in my life. Nothing here is false.
Congrats to Kit Mann for having the Mixposure Song of the Week! Check out his bio and song below!
Bio:
I am a former Police Officer, Sheriff's Deputy, EMT and Soldier. I learned everything I could so when someone was at the worst moment of ther life, they could look up, see me and know they are safe. I am now disabled. I had to have 4 major chest surgeries. The last being where the V.A. had to removed my sternum. They placed in Kevlar and Gortex fabric. So I guess now I'm bullett proof and water proof I have up loaded 23 songs. 10 songs from my first cd A Cry For Help, and have 13 I have recorded so far for my next cd Guitar Mann. My motto with music is: If I can touch one person with one song my job is done and I'm happy, then I try and do it again. I hope you find a song you really enjoy.

They look a little funky now but should kick in tomorrow as the counts start to sync up. We will be adding the counts on the artist pages like we had before also.

Congrats to J ohn Warsham for being the Mixposure.com Artist of the Month. This man has some extreme talent so please check him out!
Bio:
Born in Fort Worth, Texas to a Baptist minister father and an English teacher mother, John Worsham began singing at a young age in church and school. At the age of ten he began playing guitar and began studying classical guitar at the age of twelve. He took classical guitar lessons from G. Ricardo Fusco of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra until the age of fourteen, when he began writing songs of his own after the death of his mother. John's first recording experience was at the age of 17 in Falls Church, Virginia. Fresh out of Fork Union Military Academy, he worked with Mike Auldridge (Seldom Seen, Linda Rondstadt) on a recording project with Allen Griffin. During those sessions, Allen recorded two of John's songs, "I Should Know" and "Outta My Way".
After playing solo and in various bands throughout his teens, John then went on to college in Nashville, Tennessee at Belmont University. At Belmont, he worked with various musicians who would go onto successful careers of their own: Jim Olander (Diamond Rio), Chris Rodriguez (Keith Urban, Kenny Loggins, Michael W. Smith), Dan Huff (Faith Hill and Madonna), Michael Mishaw (Natalie Cole, Michael Bolton), and Wade Jaynes (Amy Grant, Boz Scaggs, and Randy Newman) to name but a few.
After college, John wrote for the RokBlok music publishing company owned by Steve Gibson (England Dan & John Ford Coley, Michael Johnson, Martina McBride, and Lynn Anderson). John wrote for a division of the company called Sterling Music owned by Michael Snow (Bee Gees, John Lennon). It was under the tutelage of Mr. Snow and Mr. Gibson that John began writing his best material up to that time. While at RokBlok he also worked with other artists including Tom Kimmel and Kathy Mattea.
In 1987, John walked away from music and for the next 12 years did no performing or writing. During that time, he was a waiter, banker, stand-up comedian, and hairstylist. After moving to Omaha, Nebraska in 1999, he began to have the itch to want to write and perform once more. After attending a local music performance, and seeing the ongoing demise of the American music scene with clubs using karaoke singers and DJs as headliners, John decided to go full steam ahead into performance, writing, and recording. Following the death of his Father, and a divorce soon after that, John released "Hearsay", a collection of songs that reveal the stages of emotion during the process of divorce and loss. It was welcomed with great critical and audience acclaim.
To ready his chops for even larger Midwest venues, he began performing in coffee shops, bookstores, schools/universities, and as a worship leader/musician for local area churches. It was from this time in church work that the songs for his CD, “70 x 7”, were born. His CD, "Christmas This Year" came out in September 2010, and included classic Christmas songs, as well as originals by John. John's last CD,"One More Sunset", was released in the summer of 2012. John has performed many times for local icon Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, various senators, congressman, as well as other local and national luminaries. John is a member of the American Federation of Musicians Union, Local 70-558, in Omaha. - See more at: http://www.mixposure.com/john-worsham#sthash.vEdXwWz0.dpuf
Congrats to Shelter for having the Mixposure.com Song of the Week! Check out this excellent rocker!
Bio:
From the ashes of two prominent NZ rock acts, Shelter has emerged and are already beginning to make waves in the NZ music scene.
It was near the beginning of 2010 following the demise of premier Rock act Miscreant, that vocalist Chris Brebner found himself yearning for another musical creative outlet. After writing some solo material, Brebner contacted Damian Hilt & Alan Treanor, both previous members of Miscreant to gauge their interest in trying something stylistically different from their earlier collaborations. With all three in agreement to press forward on a new musical venture, the word was put out for a talented guitarist to join them on their endeavors. Joe Ravenhall answered the call and quickly added a new dimension to the group. With the final addition of Nathan Cooper on keys, Shelter had found their exciting new sound and were ready to head into the studio.
Fresh from New Zealand’s premier recording facility York Street Studios, Shelter have produced two tracks combining the purest elements of modern rock with intricate melodies to introduce the world to their infectious new sound. With more studio time booked with Premier music producer Andrew Buckton, the wheels are only just beginning to turn on the promising machine that is Shelter. - See more at: http://www.mixposure.com/shelter#sthash.MwxGw5fD.dpuf
