It was determined that Mike Kohlgraf would be our July Mix Artist of the Month! Mike has been on Mixposure for some time and was our first DJ here when he brought his show "Saturday Night Rocks" over to to this site. Mike has been a staple in not only Mixposure but a few other sites back in the day and has been a huge supporter of artist all over the internet. He is also a pretty solid musician in his own right!

Mike thanks for being here over the last 4 years! You have truly made this site shine.

Todd

Biography

Originally from Germany, residing in the USA since 1986, I used to be in bands for years. After a long break, I took up writieng music again. and consider myself a studio musician, writing, recording and producing my own material.

I work with other artists on collaborations, namely Christopher Marting Hansen, Jim Miller and many others, such as Rick Kresiak and his wife, Mack & Dave Sanders.. One great collaboration with Maria Daines as well and hopefully, we can do it again some day. I' play guitars and keyboards.

My creations are all over the genres (Jazz, Blues, Pop, Rock, New Age, Electronica, etc), so I settled for Crossover as the main Genre. A bit of a World musician, you might say. Most of my material is on the smooth side. Hope, you enjoy some of it and do not be afraid to leave a comment. We artists are suckers for those, good or bad, doesn't matter (we like the good ones best, though). Thanks for visiting my new home here at Mixposure!

Well as you can see, we are back to where we started. After playing with the new layout for the last 3 weeks I have come to a couple of conclusions.

1. The current layout basically works! Maybe I am just tired of seeing it after 4 years of the same view/colors etc. It runs fast and let's face it, we all know where evrything is at. Gradual changes here are easier than multiple changes over night.

2. The new layout has more bells and whistles and truthfully was coming along nicely. The real fact of the matter is that it ran slower and had many defects which required developer intervention. The developer did a great job but the software corrections were not coming as quick as I would like. That put Mixposure in a bad position asking our members to deal with substandard surroundings.

For now I am going to keep it as is. Maybe a better idea would be to incorporate some of the new with the old vs the other way around. I would however like to change the colors of the main site. Since the artist pages are highly customizable, there is no reason to change those. I liked the Blue/Black combo of the new skin to be honest. It looked amazing on my laptop and my iMac. The colors just jumped out at you.

My apoplogies for the rough couple of days.

Todd

Well it looks like nobody is going to hit the mark for the most reviews this month so maybe we should carry it over next month?

Also, I would like to do a site song for July but something easy where everyone can particpate. I thought about doing a Same Song Title Madness and calling it, "Corporate America Sucks" after my company let 150+ people go but since I was only out of work a few weeks I am not as bitter as I was before.

So if you guys have ideas, please post them here. I want this to be easy! Same Song Titles are easy or Acoustic / Electric songs. The less complicated the better.

Todd

Hey Gang!

Well the Review Crew idea stirred a lot of emotions in the past. As most of you know, we decided to scrap it. What we have decided to do is this.

We have created a New Forum called Critics Pub. Many of you may know Steve Gilmore from Mixposure, SoundClick or other sites. He is probably the leading Music Reviewer on the internet! Steve has decided to start doing reviews on Mixposure.

If you would like to be a Reviewer, please create a topic in the forum with your criteria. If you want your music reviewed by Steve or one of the other Reviewers, reply to them in their thread. DO NOT CREATE A NEW THREAD. The only new posts in that forum should be by the Reviewers.

I think this format will meet with everyone's approval. These reviews wil obviously be a little more in-depth than the normal reviews. I will be updating the forum with a Rules Post as well.

Thanks to Steve and all Critics!

Congratulations to Derek Olson for having the Mixposure Song of the Week! Derek has a great guitar playing style and some solid vocals. Every penny he earned went to music or his gas tank. In his mid teens, he picked up the guitar and began teaching himself how to play. We wrote thoughts down – words - words that meant something. This is how it all began for Derek. He also began hosting an open mic in his community and playing his own material. Before he knew it, he became part of a trio (2 guitars and bass). They soon began doing shows outside their state. This entire experience both professional and personal developed into stories that he would eventually tell through his music. His styles of music that he writes are gems - beautiful from concept through delivery.

“King of the Anthill” EP was Derek’s first release. Two particular songs “I’m Tryin’” and “Let’s Melt It Away” gives a clear vision as to Derek’s thought processes, his inner vision and the eloquent way he chose to deliver his story. These two songs give us the true Derek Olson.

“I’m Tryin’” simply means just be who you are. To Derek it is about being an artist “in an over populated sea of funky fish”, as he puts it. To me it separates him from the ordinary and gives him a status of a uniqueness that is hard to describe. The story is that you do not have to look long or far to find that gem. One of many highlights in this particular song is his harmonica playing that carries a voice of its own. It gives this song depth and substance. Sung to perfection with emotion, Derek takes you to a place that most do not travel with wisdom that is realized in the end.

“Let’s Melt It Away” is keeping it simple. This song is about the balance needed in keeping a relationship healthy and sometimes keeping things simple is just what you need. As Derek states, “the song has a diary-like soliloquy that I improvised at the studio. That helps build the song and also gives it a personal context.”

Both songs are beautiful in their simplistic yet impactful way. The entire EP contains seven songs and runs a half-hour. As they say, it is not the length of time that counts but the quality that matters. In Derek’s case, nothing could be truer.

“I have never played music to make money off of it or to be famous. It is just something I love, though I also realize that in a today’s music scene there are opportunities that could take me somewhere as well. I would like to think that my music speaks for itself and to also note that this is my first undertaking as an Indie artist; I am open to any possible avenue to spread my music.”

Derek’s music speaks for us all and it speaks for itself loud and clear. His music is relatable, thought provoking and is a ‘must buy’ in my book.

Derek Olson played a 2-hour acoustic show for over 2,000 people at a summer-time boat bash hosted by Miller Lite on Castle Rock Lake in Wisconsin. He also played live for a set with Robert Randolph and the Family Band at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison, Wisconsin.

Derek will be playing venues in St. Paul and other cities in Minnesota as well as some local clubs. He is travelling around spreading his music and his joy.
